"SEMA! SEMA! SEMA!"
No, it’s not a movie title! But spending a few days there was just as suspenseful!

The "Big Guns" were showing off their latest! Ford was touting their GT40 in a "shrine-like" display and Dodge had their ’03 Viper surrounded by the latest in "go-fast" Trucks – the RT Truck with it’s 500+ Viper motor, and breaking news of the "Holy Grail" of engines, the "HEMI" being added to the 1500 Ram Truck series. … So what was Corvette up to? Members, see MOHN for the latest update!

Could this be our new replacement for the LS1-LS6?
DETROIT - General Motors Powertrain (GMPT) Saginaw (Mich.) Metal Casting Operations (SMCO) has been awarded the precision sand project to produce engine block castings for GM's next generation of aluminum V-8 engines. The company plans to invest approximately $80 million to renovate a portion of the facility to install precision sand technology, retaining jobs for 191 employees who currently work at the plant. The new engine will power future trucks, passenger cars and sport utility vehicles. Research, development and the installation of related equipment are scheduled to begin before the end of 2002, with the new engines planned for the second half of 2006

It is incredibly unique that the C5 Corvette has the distinct honor of not only having one, but TWO, one-of-a-kind factory-produced C5s!  The Platinum Power 2000 C5, won by Billy & Reva Phelps [C5R# Y3500] and now this Golden 2003!  Both are destined to be collectibles for the 75th anniversary of Corvette!

Going for the Gold!
Breaking news from the Corvette Plant!  Bowling Green is going to build a one of kind Gold Corvette!  Their JP Power goal this year is to be the best plant in North America – to win the JD Power Gold Award.

In their journey to be the best, they are going to build a one of a kind Gold Corvette starting next week.  The Corvette will be an automatic coupe with a black interior.  Engineering has designed special unique detailing for the Corvette.  It is going to be a BEAUTY!

Their build schedule shows the Corvette coming off the line first thing Monday, November 25th, meaning that it will be assembled Thursday and Friday, November 21 & 22.  All Plant Workers on the line will have the opportunity to sign the Corvette on the frame as it is built!

The Gold Corvette will be made available to employees to drive on a nightly basis.  In June, the National Corvette Museum will raffle off the Gold Corvette during the 50th Anniversary Celebration.  Profits from the Corvette will go to the NCM”s operation fund and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. --special thanks to Jane Bowlin, editor of the Performance Press (Volume 24, Number 44), for sharing this HOT news with the C5 Registry!

Congratulations to Ron Fellows and DEI ~ a Winning Combination! Dale Earnhardt, Inc. announced earlier in the week (according to the Toronto Sun, 11-12-2002)  that they have hired Ron Fellows to race at Sonoma and Watkins Glen in 2003. Dale Earnhardt Inc. will form a fourth team to accommodate Fellows -- who has a total of five BGN and CTS victories driving for a team owned by Joe Nemechek. Fellows will still race the No. 3 Corvette C5-R in the ALMS, where he won the GTS championship this season. "DEI will have a fourth team at both Sonoma and Watkins Glen for the 2003 season and Ron Fellows will be our driver," DEI spokesman Steve Crisp said.

”Fellows will also play a major role in upgrading DEI's road course racing program, acting as a coach for Dale Earnhardt Jr., Michael Waltrip and Steve Park. "Thrilled is the best word to describe how I feel," Fellows said from Sebring, Fla., where he was testing the 2003 Corvette. "Being with one of the best Winston Cup teams in the business is a big shot in the arm for me." Sponsorship and details on team personnel with the DEI effort are still being worked out. Fellows will begin working soon with DEI chassis and motor builders to prepare the team for 2003. Crisp said DEI has been pursuing Fellows since team founder Dale Earnhardt worked with him leading up to the 24 Hours of Daytona sports car race in 2001. “

Got 50th Anniversary Corvette?
Want 50th Anniversary Indy Pace Car?

Then, GM Restoration Parts has the decals for you! Just released, Corvette 50th Anniversary Indy 500 Pace Car Decal Package (Part # 6716 - priced at $495) - available for shipment on or before 12-10-02. These can be ordered through your dealer, or through www.gm-restorationparts.com Once you are on that page, click on Box 1 “Click here to order/search by part number” and enter the part number 6716. This twenty-one-piece set comes with instructions for installation but it is highly recommended that you have it professionally installed by a talented graphics installer in your area. Additional notes are, for proper installation, the body side moldings may be required to be removed and 50th Anniversary fender emblems may require removal and reinstallation. Registry Members, you will want to have this done right the first time, because the decals are NOT sold individually. If one decal is “mis-installed”, you will have to buy a whole new set to make it right. This will probably work out good for E-Bay, as there will be a lot of unused pieces from your second or third set that get sold there! J

For those of you who haven’t heard, John Lingenfelter lost control of his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Cavalier in the semifinals of the Mazda NHRA Sport Compact World race at Pomona Raceway this weekend. Although still listed in critical condition, word is that he is improving. He broke the 7th bone in his neck, but he can move his feet and he has feeling in his fingers, so this is a good sign. The brain swelling is also not as bad as it was. Our thoughts and prayers are with John and his family during this difficult time of recovery.

The featured guest at yesterday's Corvette Club of Michigan meeting was Mr. Steve Wesoloski. Steve is the Chassis Engineer for GM's C5R Team. According to him, Corvette has been selected as the featured marque for next year's 24 Hours of LeMans Race, and will be the official pace car!

There is not a day that goes by that we don't receive e-mails and/or phone calls from members looking for a dealer who will sell them a 50th Anniversary Coupe or Convertible without gouging above window sticker. Even on E-Bay there has been attempts by some to charge up to $8,000 over GM's MSRP. Allocations have been tight, but it now appears that C5 Registry Dealer Member XC022 Les Stanford Chevrolet may be the answer to your prayers. The information they have asked us to forward to our members is as follows:

CHEVY PUMPED UP OUR ALLOCATION PLUS WE'VE BEEN BUYING UP OTHER DEALER'S ALLOCATIONS. WE HAVE 25 UNSPOKEN FOR 50TH ALLOCATIONS. COUPES OR CONVERTIBLES...ORDER IT HOWEVER YOU WANT THEM. $1000 DEPOSIT MANDATORY. SELLING FOR MSRP PLUS FEES AND TAXES. STILL ABLE TO DO R8C MUSEUM DELIVERY. And while we are on the subject of great magazine articles covering our beloved C5 Corvette, be sure and check out the November 2002 Motor Trend, where Jack Keebler and Matt Stone author a superb article, "Dodge Viper SRT-10 Meets Chevrolet Corvette Z06," pp. 46-53. We hold our own, even with the Viper’s 95 hp difference!

Their conclusion seems to be on the money with a closing comment of "the Z06 is still seriously fast in a straight line and can corner and stop right up there with the Big Bad Dodge. It’s a lot easier to live with on a daily basis. The Viper is a weekend toy, while the Corvette would serve as an everyday runner – that happens to have 405 horses. And let’s not forget that it’s a cheaper date by some $30 grand."

October 9
Scathing! It’s the only way we can describe the November 2002 Car & Driver article (pp. 40-46), written by John Phillips, regarding the new 2003 Dodge Viper SRT-10. Laughing and dying at the same time, we can’t remember ever reading anything like this on a new model comparison before!

In the article, Phillips reviews the Viper’s ability to "pop popcorn" and "cook eggs & bacon" on the hot sills. Our all-time favorite line. . . "bumps cause the car to talk. First the dash croaks out its name, then the convertible top, then the center console, then the bulkhead behind your back." Phillips makes a comparison between a middle-age man’s physical appearance while driving the Viper. You have just got to read it to believe it!

After six pages of disbelief, Phillips ends with the most truthful statement to date. His words, not ours . . . "But the truth is, a Corvette Z06 – some $33K less costly – is not only miles more comfy but is more effective in real-world A-to-B blasts, simply because it’s half as difficult to drive."

We couldn’t agree with this statement more!!

Members, there’s always a price to be paid when you have rebates and discounted interest rates!

In a time when the U.S. economy is this slow, it’s hard to understand what GM is thinking in regards to the recently announced price increase on 2003 Corvettes. MSRP on a ’03 Coupe is now $43325, an increase of $100. A Convertible is now priced at $50,075, an increase of $375 and a Z06 is priced at $50,975, a $490 increase. The Option prices appear to be unchanged.

Only Trucks Now Transport Our Corvettes!!
The primary reason the Corvette assembly plant has stopped shipping new Corvettes by rail is to better satisfy the customers. Shipping by rail, said quality manager Rick Robbins, causes six times as much damage to our product as does transporting by truck.

As of this month, the 40% of the production that was transported to distant points around the country by railroad is now trucked to its final destination.  According to Tom Kelly of P.C. and L. the change meant an addition of 35 drivers to the staff of Allied- the Corvettes carrier - and 35 Trucks.  The process will be used on a trial basis for the next six months, said Robbins. If quality data shows that damage to the carefully painted Corvettes is not as great, trucking only is sure to continue.

The reason for increased likelihood of damage by rail the process itself, he said.  Corvettes shipped by rail were loaded on a truck at the plant, transported to Saturn in Spring Hill, unloaded, then reloaded on a rail car. Once they reached their rail destination, they were unloaded, then loaded on another carrier for delivery to the dealership. "Obviously, much more handling is involved with the shipping by rail, " Robins said. "Damage was recorded on the one a d on-half percent of the vehicles sent by rail and only one-fourth percent of those trucked to the dealers." Trucking only should lead to a significant decrease in the numbers of chips, scratches and other mutilations encountered on cars delivers by rail, Robbins said.

Corvettes were shipped by rail to the most distant parts of the country including many in California, the Northwest and in Florida. The Bowling Green plant shipped by rail for the time the plant opened in 1981 until 1987. A rail car came to the Allied lot in back of the plant and cars were loaded there. In 1987 this practice was discontinued but resumed in 1995 at the Saturn Plant. The C5 Registry wishes to thank Jane Bowlin, Rick Robbins, and Tom Kelly of the Corvette Assembly Plant for the above information. The C5 Registry feels this is an excellent move, and will surly improve the quality of our future Corvettes!

Shop the GM Performance Parts "Garage Sale". GM has discounted to its dealers some of its most popular performance-enhancing parts on the market. The "Garage Sale" runs from Oct. 1 through Nov. 30, 2002.

"These parts aren't just slow movers - they represent 76 percent of our sales," said Gary Penn, GM Performance Parts product specialist. "With discounts to dealers on approximately 90 of our top-selling parts, including intake manifolds, cylinder blocks, and the ram Jet 502 crate engine, this promotion is one that customers can't afford to miss."

During the "Garage Sale" local GM Performance Parts dealers will have access to unprecedented parts discounts, including the 355-horsepower ZZ4 5.7 liter engine and the popular Hot Cam kit.

The promotion reflects GM Performance Parts' emphasis and commitment to providing customers innovative parts with proven performance and value, Penn said.

Last' Camaro Sells for $71,500
The last new Camaro to be sold by Chevrolet - a red, T-topped Z-28 - brought a tidy $71,500 at a charity auction.

"I got a little crazy," said the buyer, Mark Gembinski, a 32-year-old business manager from Mayville, Mich. "I paid a lot more than I wanted to, but I wanted it bad."

"It's a very sad day for us," said Scott Settlemire, Chevrolet's assistant brand manager for the Camaro line. "But the money is going somewhere good."

The C3 Vette Registry is proud to sponsor a special tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center, The Pentagon and in Pennsylvania on 9/11/2001. Also, this will serve as a special salute to the men and women who helped with rescue and recovery, and the men and women who are currently fighting the war on terrorism.

As a special tribute, the C3 Vette Registry is asking that *ALL Corvette owners* drive their Corvette to work or anywhere they need to go on 9/11/2002. And to signify that they are a part of this special tribute, would like them to *ride with their headlights on all day*.

The Corvette is a symbol of America and as such, we feel this is a great way to show our support of America on the anniversary of one of the worst days in U.S. history.

If you plan to participate in the Corvette Owners 9/11 Tribute, please visit the C3 Vette Registry website and add your name to the participant list, so others can see how many Corvette Owners of America are participating in this tribute. Carlisle Corvette Sticker Clarification
We just heard from Lisa Lafferty from Carlisle Productions who is being inundated phone calls about a second decal/pass that allows you to park on the C5 Registry hill. Lisa has informed me that there is no second decal/pass required to park on the Registry hill. What a C5 Registry member needs to do is purchase a Fun Field Pass ($40/in advance, $50/Day of Show) and place it on their C5. When they arrive they need to tell the Traffic Directors as you come through the gate that you want to park on the C5 Registry hill.

Note to Members: As in past years, the C5 Registry area which holds about 600 C5s, the C5 area fills up very, very fast! If you do not arrive early, you will probably not be able to find a place in the C5 Registry Parking Corral. What does early mean? That means by 7:30 a.m., you should be coming through the gate!

The following is an announcement that Mobil 1 will be used by Cadillac.  An endorsement of the superiority of it over other synthetics.

FAIRFAX, Va.--(AutomotiveWire)--July 23, 2002--Mobil 1(R), the world's leading synthetic motor oil, has been selected as original equipment (factory-fill) in Cadillac's all-new luxury roadster, the Cadillac XLR. GM has noticed several comments from people with 2002 models about a "jingle" noise. The best description is that it sounds like someone shaking a key ring and it occurs most often in 6spd vehicles on deceleration. This condition is the result of the exhaust tuning for 2002 and is actually caused by exhaust gas impulses within the exhaust system. It is not caused by something loose or broken on the vehicle. It is also not coming from the transmission. GM Engineering is aware of the condition and is currently validating a correction.

Drivers to visit U.S. Navy personnel with the Fifth Fleet following Le Mans Open Test

Le Mans, France - All six of the drivers from Corvette Racing will be embarking on a special lap of the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet currently stationed in the Persian Gulf as part of the ongoing war on terrorism. The Fifth Fleet has been a fixture of America's military presence in the region for some time, but has been at a heightened state of alert since the terrorist attacks against the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.

The drivers will visit U.S. military installations and ships in the region as part of a goodwill tour in appreciation of the ongoing efforts and sacrifices being made by U.S. military personnel.

Developed in association with the navy's Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division, the idea for the program was born out of the Sept. 11 attack and its tragic impact on Gary Claudio, GM Racing group marketing manager, who lost several friends and family in the destruction of the trade towers in New York.

Personal tragedy inspires program
"This effort started at Petit Le Mans last year when we painted the car to honor the New York police and fire personnel in acknowledgement of the 'United We Stand' campaign," Claudio said. "We get a lot of attention in this racing business, but these men and women are truly the heroes enabling us to pursue our dreams and live in safer world."

Corvette race team to spend 5 days with Navy
Claudio and the drivers will spend some five days in the Persian Gulf signing autographs, meeting military personnel and distributing racing apparel. In addition to the support of the US Navy, GM Goodwrench Service, GMAC, UAW-GM, Mobil 1 and the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) sanctioning organization have all made contributions in support of the effort.

May 6, 2002
Corvette Racing will return to Le Mans as defending GTS class winners from 2001 with the same, yet more refined C5-Rs. Corvette continues the Chevrolet tradition of racing production-based vehicles to improve the breed and enhance the image of GM performance globally. In addition to Corvette, the Chevrolet Camaro and Monza models have also raced in Le Mans.

The Le Mans race will be the last outing for the two C5-R chassis that have racked up numerous wins and 1-2 finishes including last year's Le Mans and Daytona 24 Hours, the 2001 America Le Mans Series (ALMS) GTS Manufacturers' and Teams' Championships and the 2002 12 Hours of Sebring. Two new chassis will compete the balance of the North American ALMS schedule beginning at Sears Point May 19.

Registry members . . . Word has just reached us from Jane Bowlin at the Vette Gazette that Plant tours are re-open to the Public! Some welcome news for Corvette enthusiasts and potential visitors from around the country. After almost six month of downtime, plant tours were re-opened to the public on Monday, April 29th. The 9:00 am and 1:00 pm tours resume for visitors following their closure November 1st due to the events of September 11, 2001. Some of the rules put in place for group tours, which reopened in January, remain in effect for public tours.

 They are:

  • Children must be seven years of age or older.
  • All visitors must wear closed toe shoes.
  • All guests must sign in at the Tour Room and watch the plant safety video prior to the plant tour.
  • No cameras, backpacks, purses, packages, fanny packs, or other containers may be brought into the facility except by special request (for medical reasons, etc.)

Group tours are available by reservation only (call 270-745-8287) and will be available at 10:00 am, 11:00 am, and 12:00 noon Monday through Friday. The same rules above apply to group tours.

So far this year the plant has hosted just under 2,500 visitors. In 2001, 47,492 people visited the plant, making it the second largest tourist attraction in Bowling Green (the Corvette Museum is   first).

Members, this is fabulous news, and a BIG C5 Registry Members THANK YOU to all those working behind the scenes to allow the public tours to resume. We’re sure with the 50th Anniversary of Corvette taking place in the upcoming months that a new visitor record will be set at the Bowling Green Assembly plant!

Registry members . . . Rumors are flying! There are rumblings of a rebate/cash back or financing that may be made available on the 2002 C5 Corvettes effective, most likely, May 1, 2002. The consensus of rumors leads us to believe that it will be some type of a “1-2-3” plan, or a rebate/cash back on newly purchased Corvettes after May 1st. The “1-2-3” plan may be 1% interest rate on Corvettes for 36 months, 2% interest rate on Corvettes for 48 months, and 3% interest rate on Corvettes for 60 months. Of course, GM will have the final say on whether this happens or not, but if it does, you can bet it will also be made available on many other GM model lines and vehicles as well. But to offer any kind of program for the Corvette, especially in Springtime, which has always been considered the “HOT” buying season, is an offer you don’t want to miss!

We know this is a CORVETTE News section, but we are performance nuts, and Bob Lutz's announcement today from the New York auto show should stir up some excitement!

The Pontiac GTO Returns:Monaro
The next Pontiac GTO will come from Australia. Lutz told a breakfast group at the New York Auto Show that GM will import the Australian-built Monaro to the U.S. About 20,000 each year will be imported into the United States.

The U.S. version will come with a 5.7 liter V-8 and a 6-speed manual transmission. It will make its debut at either the 2003 Los Angeles or Detroit auto shows, said Lutz. It will be sold as a 2004 model Pontiac GTO.

Lutz said: "It's the most sought after, high-profile car on Australia's roads now," he said. "It will deliver the type of performance that made the original GTO famous." View the Monaro CLICK HERE

"DICK GULDSTRAND OFFERS IMMORTALITY"
No, it's not some new religion or weird California cult. At least not in the strict definition. What it is is the 50th Anniversary of the Corvette -- America's favorite sports car which often inspires a cult following bordering on religious fervor -- and Dick Guldstrand's plans to celebrate this historic milestone.
